  Chapter 3

Late

They were both startled awake by a school bell. They slowly got out of their beds, and then realized what the school bell meant. They were late to school! They sprinted to their closets and grabbed clothes. They quickly dressed and then sprinted down the stairs. They ran into the kitchen and grabbed an apple without breaking stride. As they ran across the plaza, they felt like it was longer than it had ever been.

They slammed the doors of the school behind them and ran inside. Lía was panting and Aríana was tired but not showing it. They ran into the classroom and slid into seats in the back. Mr. Sim gave them a stern look but didn’t punish them further.

After school, Maddi came to find them in the courtyard. She asked them why they were late for class, and she was astounded when they told her they overslept. She kept ranting for what felt like an hour, making key points of how they never overslept, and they had never been tardy. They finally escaped with the excuse of needing to plan their trip to the forest.

They weren’t lying when they said they were going to work on their plan. They had missed a whole night of working, and they still didn’t know who stole their notebook. They jumped into the secret room, and walked to the television. They had figured out a way to make their television cover news from the ground. They wanted to see more of the ground world, so they clicked the television on. Sadly, all that was on was a sport they called Tennis. They thought that was boring so they clicked it off.

They walked over to the planning nook and opened their notebook. They opened to the next blank page and wrote:

Lía - Hi again! Sorry we lost you. Even though we only lost you for like 2 hours, I still feel bad. I was so scared for a second. So again, I am super sorry. On a brighter topic, we are planning our escape to be in three days' time. But, we will probably get held back and have to go this Saturday, 4 days from now because of school. We’ll see if Aríana thinks the same.

Bye dude,

Lía Martínez❤️

Aríana - Hi. I am not going to go all sentimental on you like my sis did. But I will say sorry for losing you. OK, I said it, now I can move on! I agree with Lía, I think our plans will get delayed. But, it doesn’t matter when we go, as long as we actually go someday, but it is kind of annoying to get delayed by boring old school. Well, nice seeing you, even though you are a notebook who doesn’t actually care.

Catch ya later,

Aríana Martínez:)

They jumped up and fist bumped. Lía said, “Buen trabajo chica. Tu entrada fue genial.” They were both silent for a second. They rarely spoke Spanish since they ran away from home in Spain to go to the village.

Aríana broke the silence by saying, “Gracias, your entry was awesome too.”

They shared a smile and then agreed it was time to go to bed. After all, it was almost 10:00pm. So, they climbed in bed and they both fell fast asleep in a matter of minutes.
