Chapter 6
Birthday
Lía was startled awake by the clanging of pots and pans in the kitchen. When Lía looked at her sister’s bed to see if she was awake, the bed was empty. Lía walked downstairs and looked around in shock. Aríana was busy at the stove, cooking a big breakfast. Lía was so surprised she didn’t know what to say.
Aríana finally noticed Lía was there and she said, “Happy birthday Lía!”
“Wait, what?” Lía said. Lía had been so busy planning their escape, she had forgotten all about their birthday, they were 15 now! Aríana was so shocked Lía had forgotten about her own 15th birthday!
“Lía, you're 15 today, remember,” Aríana shrieked. Lía was still in shock and was still just processing the fact that she was 15, and Aríana, who never cooks, had made her a birthday breakfast. They enjoyed their extravagant breakfast in silence.
Then, Lía said, “gracias por el desayuno de cumpleaños, realmente lo aprecié.”
They shared a smile and finished off the breakfast quickly. This was the first time Lia had ever had such an amazing birthday announcement.
They walked to school, and were smiley for the rest of the day. They learned about the scary facts of the dark forest, but nothing could dampen their mood! They realized they had to make entries in their journal, because it was the day before they escaped into the woods!
They rushed home and grabbed some crackers so they could get right to writing in their journal. They felt like they hadn’t seen their ‘old friend’ the journal in a while. They went to the secret room and grabbed the notebook. This time, Aríana got the first entry.
Aríana - Hi again! Tomorrow is the day! We are going to the forest tomorrow at noon! I am so excited. I am so stoked that I don’t even know what to write! So, this is all I have to write.

Lía - Hey guys. We are going to sneak into the forest tomorrow! I am psyched! I can’t wait. I hope whoever finds this journal will find it as helpful as we did. (Even though we wrote it.)

P.S. I feel pretty bad that I forgot about our birthday. I should have done something for Aríana, but I’m going to let it go!
They walked to their room, wished each other a happy birthday, and fell into a deep, happy sleep.
